Good design, to us, is a little like ‘umami’.
In the culinary world, the Japanese word ‘umami' is often described as a pleasant, savoury taste. It isn't necessarily the first flavour you notice, but it adds depth. It's the element that makes a dish feel more complete.
We think good design can work in much the same way.
It's often the smallest details that give a piece its character and build an attachment to it over time. It might be the profile of an edge, the slight curve of a leg, or the way the corners have been softened. Details that don't necessarily shout at you, but are always present.
When we design a concrete table, we're not just thinking about what it looks like. We're thinking about how it feels in a space, how people will gather around it, how other materials sit alongside it and how we can work with concrete to create something that feels refined. Every curve, edge, proportion and detail is considered by our industrial design team before a piece makes its way to the workshop. We design with the material in mind, understanding how concrete behaves and how those decisions translate through mould making, casting and finishing.

But good design also needs to work in real life.
Our tables are made to live outside just as much as inside. In the sun, through the rain, alongside the salt air of the coast, and surrounded by the landscape. Concrete has long belonged outdoors. It has an inherent durability that makes it well suited to the elements, but at Blend, we've taken the material further.
Through considered design, specialist finishing techniques and high-quality sealers, we add another layer of protection to the material. The result is concrete in its most considered form, balancing the raw character of the material with how it performs to the realities of outdoor living.
